‘Empty-nesters’ can solve fostering crisis

COUNCIL chiefs in St Helens are backing an innovative scheme to encourage ‘empty-nesters’ to become mature foster carers.

The scheme is part of a programme of drives to increase the number of foster carers in the region and focuses on people aged in their late 40 and 50s, whose children have left home.

Television adverts will be broadcast over the coming weeks to back up the You Can Foster campaign’s message.

Councillor Alison Bacon, cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “More mature foster carers have so much to offer - and provide a incredibly satisfying and rewarding experience.”

A council spokesman added: “Campaign organisers recognise the invaluable parenting skills more mature people have acquired in bringing up their own children.”
