FORMER council leader Brian Spencer is among a string of high-profile councillors who will bid to retain their seats at the forthcoming local elections.

The local Lib Dem leader will stand in the Sutton ward against four opponents - from Labour, the Conservatives, the Green Party and the BNP - in the borough-wide vote on May 3.

Other high-profile councillors involved in the 2012 local elections are Barrie Grunewald, Andy Bowden, Carole Kavanagh, Teresa Sims, Alison Bacon and current Mayor of St Helens Tom Hargreaves.

In the Rainhill ward, Coun Grunewald - the deputy leader of St Helens Council - faces two opponents.

Meanwhile Coun Bowden, the current cabinet member for urban regeneration and housing, is up against three other candidates in the Parr ward.

Fellow Labour councillor Alison Bacon, the cabinet member for environmental protection, will aim to retain her seat in Billinge and Seneley Green and outgoing Mayor Coun Hargreaves will hope to do likewise in Bold.

Ex Mayors Sheila Seddon and Teresa Sims will both bid to retain their seats too - in the Thatto Heath and Eccleston wards respectively.

And, in an interesting move, long-serving councillor Carole Kavanagh, currently a Lib Dem, is set to run as an independent candidate in her native Moss Bank.

As well as a number of candidates from the three main UK political parties, there will also be Green Party candidates in each of the 16 wards, two independent candidates, three British National Party candidates and one candidate from the Social Equality Party.
