ELECTION UPDATE: Defeated Lib Dem boss probed over assault claim
Ex-council leader Brian Spencer is being investigated over an allegation of assault
POLICE are investigating claims defeated Liberal Democrat boss Brian Spencer assaulted a Labour candidate at this morning’s election count.
Mr Spencer, who lost his Sutton seat during a disastrous night for his party, was seen being led away by police.
It is alleged the former miner was involved in a scuffle with Eccleston candidate Mark Johnston in the town hall foyer.
A police spokeswoman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that is has received an allegation of assault at St Helens Town Hall today at 12.30am (Friday, 4 May).
“Officers are currently dealing with the complaint.”
The spokeswoman confirmed Mr Spencer had NOT been arrested.
The fracas was the culmination of a terrible evening for the Liberal Democrats.
They lost four seats and now hold only five seats on the council, a stunning reversal from two years ago when they held a slender majority.
A number of senior figures - including group leader Spencer and his deputy, Suzanne Knight - lost their seats.
