Two young ducklings found themselves in a spot of bother last week after their mother unwittingly left them to fend for themselves in Knowsley Safari Park’s lion enclosure!

The super-cute mallard ducklings came face-to-face with the park’s resident kings of the jungle after their mother made the dangerous error before waddling off.

Luckily, Knowsley Safari’s “quack-thinking” keepers spotted the danger just in time.

They managed to keep the big cats distracted long enough to rescue the ducklings.

Far from being permanent residents of the park, the ducklings were being raised there naturally by their mother... who didn’t realise she was in the lions’ den!

The fortunate fowl, nicknamed Ant and Dec by the keepers after the popular TV double act, have since been exploring safer grounds at the park.

In the meantime, Knowsley Safari staff are hoping to locate their mother and reunite the family.

A spokeswoman for Knowsley Safari Park said: “This just goes to show that you never know what will happen each day here at Knowsley Safari!

“I’m so glad we spotted Ant and Dec in time.

“They had no idea of the danger they were in but the lions had definitely spotted them.

“Luckily, we managed to distract the pride and evacuate the ducklings just in time.

“Before they knew it we had got them curled up in front of a heater to warm them up. Only once we had done that did we let them out into a safer section of the park.”
