Dream pint
A real ale inspired by St Helens' Dream statue has won a coveted award.
The Dream beer from the George Wright Brewery in Rainford was judged the best of more than 70 ales on offer at Rainhill Rotary Club's annual festive fundraiser - which helped raise 12,500 for charity.
Real ales from as far afield as Cornwall and Cumbria were lined up behind the 50ft long bar throughout the three-day event at Prescot Leisure Centre.
But it was the 4.1 per cent Dream brew that headed the field.
Chief brewer Keith Wright, who won the silver prize at the Great British Beer Festival at London's Earls Court, said: "We used what is probably the best barley in the world, malted in Britain's oldest traditional malting house, with hop flower added to enrich the brew even further. The result is a beer that is very more-ish - the class of pint that insists that you sup another mouthful."
It was not the first time Keith Wright had topped the popularity charts at the annual beer festival either.
His brew Cheeky Pheasant was selected as the best at the club's first event in 2003.
"It's still a big seller," said Mr Wright, who runs the successful micro-brewery with his wife Elaine and just four full and part-time staff.
"Dream has only been out for a couple of months and already it has won a prize. I intend to enter it into a number of other competitions."
Ian Howitt, chairman of Rainhill Rotary Club's beer festival committee, said: "There was a wonderful range of quality real ales at this year's beer festival, but it was Dream that won over the hearts and palates of the experts. It was good to see a local brewery take the prize.
"It was also great to see so many local sponsors and beer enthusiasts supporting the club's efforts to raise funds that will be distributed to a whole range of local charities and good causes before the next Beer Festival."
