Deaf victim left shaken by assault

A DEAF man was punched to the ground by a gang of youths in an early hours assault - sparking a large scale disturbance.
At about 1.30am a number of youths were standing outside Uno’s Pizza on Prescot High Street as a 56-year-old man approached.
The man, who is deaf and has a speech impediment, accidentally bumped into one of the youths as he attempted to enter the premises and, following an altercation, was punched to the ground.
The victim was taken into the takeaway and a number of people left the premises and began remonstrating with the youths. A large scale disturbance then erupted in the street and, during the disturbance, some people attempted to cause criminal damage to the store.
Two boys, aged 15 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the July 15 incident and have since been bailed pending further inquiries. A number of other people have also been identified and questioned by police.
Fortunately, the victim was not seriously injured during the incident, but has been left “very shaken”. The incident is being treated as a disability hate crime.
DC Peter Dibbert said: “This was a violent and unprovoked attack on a man who was just going to order some food and we urge anyone who saw what happened to get in touch with us.
