Police seized 22 animals – including a number in Whiston – as part of a crackdown on dangerous dogs.

Warrants were carried out at homes across Merseyside targeting owners of banned breeds who had been given court ordered exemptions to allow them to keep dogs covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Three people including five-year-old Ellie Lawrenson from St Helens have been killed by dogs since 2007. The raids were conducted after intelligence that the owners were breaching conditions of their court order. The dogs could now be destroyed.
