Council to vote on changing town’s motto

Writer Frank Cottrell Boyce inspired the idea to revert to St Helens former motto

ST Helens’ motto could be about to change - because of the Olympics.

Cabinet chiefs were inspired by Frank Cottrell Boyce’s use of the town’s former coats of arms Ex Terra Lucum (meaning, Out of the Earth, light) in the Olympic opening ceremony.

It was ditched following boundary changes in 1974 for Prosperitas in Excelsis.

Now councillors will vote tonight at a full council meeting on whether to re-adopt the former motto.

Rainhill-born Cottrell Boyce (pictured) wrote the script for Danny Boyle’s Olympic extravaganza and said Ex Terra Lucum was a significant influence in the development of the ceremony.

Council leader Marie Rimmer said: “What a tremendous tribute to the borough’s historic legacy and our key role in the industrial revolution which featured so prominently in the London 2012 ceremony.

“For our borough to be an integral part of a ceremony that captured the attention of the world is beyond words.

“We have had lots of people asking to revert to the Ex Terra Lucem motto over a number of years and many more recently in recognition of the Olympics.”
