Council - snow closures were right call

COUNCIL chiefs have defended the decision of many St Helens schools to close because of recent bad weather.

Schools across the country shut following snow fall last week prompting complaints from parents that headteachers were too eager to close.

Education bosses, headed by cabinet member for schools Alison Bacon (pictured), said individual school heads had made the right call.

A town hall spokesman said: “We have to be guided by the people on the ground. They will know whether surrounding streets represent a hazard for pedestrians.”

“At several schools yesterday we know there was also the added complication of an overnight power cut that knocked out heating systems.”
