A COMMUNITY champion who was awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours list has been saluted by Mayor of St Helens Geoff Almond.

Bette Yates, who started the Fingerpost Tenants and Residents Association (Fintra) back in 1992, saw her decades of hard work rewarded on New Year’s Day.

Coun Geoff Almond saluted the 69-year-old’s tireless community work at the start of the full council meeting earlier this month.

Mrs Yates said: “I had been due to finish this year - everyone has their ups and downs and I was worried nobody was listening anymore.

“But this has spurred me on to keep at it and we’ve got a few new projects lined up - including the creation of a skateboard park.

“I was delighted to be awarded the MBE but if I didn’t have the support of committee members, volunteers and the people of Fingerpost I would never have acheived what I’ve acheived.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet though. I still can’t take it all in. It’s the sort of things celebrities get - not a little girl from Pocket Nook Street!”

Fintra, based on Bolton Close, Fingerpost, has helped numerous residents over the years in a bid to help keep the community together.

And Mrs Yates, who has previously also been crowned Woman of the Year and Neighbour of the Year, still revels in the role of championing the underdog.

She added: “Fingerpost is one of the few places in town that still has a community atmosphere- where people help others who can’t help themselves. I want to keep it that way.”
