A headteacher at the centre of a child porn investigation died after slashing his wrists, an inquest heard yesterday.

Ronan Dunne, 43, was pronounced dead at 8.16am on December 19 last year in a room at the Premier Inn at Lea Green.

An inquest at St Helens Town Hall heard how, a fortnight earlier, police had attended the Huyton primary school boss’s home address and seized various items in connection with a criminal investigation.

He was then questioned by detectives on December 17 and released on conditional bail. As part of his bail, Mr Dunne was not allowed to live at his home address in Rainhill - so instead checked into a room at the Premier Inn.

After spending December 18 with his wife, Mr Dunne returned to the hotel and the pair exchanged several text messages.

The following morning she was unable to contact him, so drove to the hotel and asked staff to open the door of his room.

Mr Dunne’s body was found in the bath. He had several wounds to both forearms and a knife was recovered from the bloodied water.

A post mortem found that Mr Dunne had suffered extensive lacerations to both forearms. A pathologist recorded the medical cause of death as “severe haemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds on both forearms”.

Recording a suicide verdict, Coroner Christopher Sumner said: “Mr Dunne was found in a bath full of bloodied water. At the bottom of the bath was a knife. I have no doubt that, unfortunately, these injuries were caused by Mr Dunne himself.”
