Chance to follow in Formby’s footsteps..

Steve Forshaw and his wife who are launching St Helens' first ever Ukulele Group

GEORGE Formby famously played it... and you could too. That’s the message from the founder of the St Helens Ukulele Club.

Steve Forshaw, 55, who only started playing the instrument earlier this year, hopes to encourage experienced players and complete novices alike to give it a go at a new weekly jam night.

He said: “With the ukulele, you only need to learn about six chords and you can play 90 per cent of the music.

“My wife, Helen, and I were in a ukulele group in Ormskirk, but they wanted to form a band - whereas we prefer it to be a less formal affair.

“So I went into The Junction pub in Rainford and asked if there was a local ukulele group we could join instead. He said there wasn’t but said why don’t you start your own.

“We’ve recruited an experienced player to lead the sessions.”

The first meeting of the St Helens Ukulele Club will be at the Junction pub in Rainford at 7pm on Thursday, September 20.
