EAGLE-eyed town centre CCTV operators have helped police make several arrests in recent weeks.
On one occasion, police asked for help in tracing two men suspected of committing a burglary at the Windle Pilkington building.
A description was circulated, CCTV operators soon spotted them and police arrested them on suspicion of burglary.
Officers also recovered a quantity of copper piping and other metals believed to have been stolen from the building.
And at 11.30pm on July 7, CCTV operators spotted a silver Ford Mondeo estate car being driven erratically along the Linkway.
Staff monitored the vehicle’s movements while calling the police.
The vehicle was stopped by officers a short while later and the driver was arrested for drink driving.
Police also found that the driver had no licence and the vehicle no MOT and as a result, the vehicle was seized.
The culprit will need to pay towage and storage fees and produce valid insurance before it is be released to him.
A council spokesman said the operation was proving invaluable to detering criminals from St Helens.
