A DESIGNER from St Helens who was headhunted by a world-famous fashionista has received rave reviews for her first professional catwalk show.

Carly Ellis, from Eccleston, moved to New York to study towards a degree in fashion design in 2010 after securing a coveted place on the prestigious Parsons masters course.

Since graduating with a spectacular runway show last September, the 25-year-old has been taken on full-time by top fashion designer Donna Karan - founder of the world-famous DKNY brand.

Carly’s proud mum, Mandy, said: “Carly began as the associate outerwear designer for DKNY in October but, two weeks later her boss, the design director, left and wasn’t replaced. Carly rose to the challenge and was recently promoted from associate designer to designer.

“Her first runway show for DKNY was held on Sunday. She designed all the suits, coats, outerwear and leisure wear. The show has already received critical acclaim too, as well as trending on Twitter.”

Carly cites early memories of creating her own catalogue designs at her grandmother’s house as the beginning of her passion for fashion.

After studying textiles at Rainford High at both GCSE and A level, she completed an art foundation course before enrolling at the University of Westminster and beating worldwide competition for a place on the Parsons course.

Among the rave reviews already received for her first professional catwalk show was one from the hugely influential Elle magazine.

The show opened with one of Carly’s looks being modelled by British model Cara Delevingne.

After the show, Donna Karan, who sponsors the Parsons course and had previously told Carly’s tutor: “I must have her for DKNY”, told of her pride and gave hard-working Carly a well-deserved hug.
