A ST Helens college student and his uncle are preparing to walk more than 20 miles for charity.
Nathan Sutton, 16, and his uncle, Jason Sutton, 37, both of Newton-le-Willows, will walk from The Oak Tree Inn, in Crow Lane East in Newton to Southport’s Pleasureland.
The pair decided to take on the sponsored challenge, which takes place on July 1, following the death of close family friend, James Woodward, in March.
And just a few weeks ago, Jason’s cousin, and Nathan’s second cousin, Zoe Rodgers, 37, of Atherton, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Nathan, who is studying level one in brick laying at St Helens College, said: “Around six people close to us have either passed away or managed to get over cancer, so it have given us the drive to do whatever we can.
“I was also inspired by my second cousin, Zoe, as she said when she beats her cancer, she will do a walk for charity, and so I thought if she could do it, so can I.
“The walk will be a challenge, but I am sure we will get through it. I have been doing a bit of training to build up my stamina.”
The pair’s epic hike will raise cash for Wigan and Leigh Hospice, and the Marie Currie Cancer.
Jason, a milk man, added: “Nathan decided to do something for a cancer charity after his second cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“And as our friend James died from cancer, the illness has affected us all, so it felt appropriate to do something for Marie Curie.
“As Kay’s Diary supports Wigan and Leigh Hospice and I have featured on the hospice’s leaflets for promoting its lottery games, we wanted to raise money for them as well.
“I am looking forward to the walk and I have already started training by doing a walk from Towyn to Rhyll, in North Wales.
“We have no set target, but I have 360 customers on my milk round, so I am hoping for around £500.”
