A St Helens firm has been named the Greater China Rising Star at the UK Trade and Investment China awards.

Biomass Engineering Ltd was recognised as the business which has achieved the most in Greater China - despite only having traded in the market for three years or less.

The firm, based on the Sankey Valley industrial estate, design, deliver and install renewable energy solutions.

They began targeting the Chinese market after winning a hotly-contested competition to design a renewable energy project in Shanghai and have since met officials from other Chinese regions.

Since then Biomass Engineering bosses have met with officials from many other regions of China and created a wholly foreign-owned enterprise, Biomass Energy China (BEC), in Shanghai.

Philomena Chen, from UK Trade and Investment, said: “There was an outstanding level of entries for this year’s Rising Star Award, and the 2014 winners are the companies who have showed the most evidence of a commitment to the market and who have successfully begun trading in mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan.

“Biomass Engineering Ltd seized an opportunity to sell into China with its know how and technology and has built on this by opening a wholly owned subsidiary and a joint venture to enable further growth.”
