Bridge death riddle
A MAN who threw himself off a landmark bridge had been due to be interviewed by police over comments he made while being treated in a psychiatric unit.
Tragic John Blackburn jumped off the Sherdley Bridge just hours after a police visit following a confession to a crime committed when he was a teenager.
But an inquest at St Helens Town Hall heard that the 32-year-old, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, had complained about hearing voices at the time.
Mr Blackburn, of Salhouse Gardens, Nutgrove, had tried twice before to take his own life and had once grabbed the steering wheel while his partner, Kevin Foster, was driving.
Mr Blackburn sustained “catastrophic” fatal injuries after jumping from the Sherdley Bridge on the evening of May 6 last year, leaving his beloved dog, Winston, behind. A police investigation found there were no suspicious circumstances.
Coroner Christopher Sumner recorded a suicide verdict.
