A teenager from Parr has been arrested over a vicious New Year’s Eve assault which left a 40-year-old man in hospital fighting for his life.
The 17-year-old lad and a man aged 28 from Haydock were held on Thursday evening.
The youngster has since been released on police bail while the older man remains at St Helens police station where he is being questioned by detectives.
Police were called to Church Road in Haydock shortly before midnight following reports that a man was lying unconscious near to the junction with Arrowsmith Road - opposite The Jade Garden Chinese takeaway.
An ambulance was called and paramedics took the victim, a local man who had suffered serious head injuries, to Walton Neurological Hospital in Liverpool.
His condition was described as critical and his next of kin have been informed.
Detectives believe there may be many witnesses who have not yet spoken to police.
Det Chief Insp Lee Turner said: “A man is in a very poorly condition in hospital so I am calling on the people who were there to do the right thing and come forward and tell us what happened. We believe this man was assaulted and that there were a number of people in Church Road and Arrowsmith Road who must have seen what happened.
“In particular, I need to speak to a group of men and women who were stood next to the victim while he lay on the ground.
“My officers are carrying out extensive inquiries in Haydock and we are doing everything we can to trace the person or people responsible for assaulting this man so that they can be brought to justice.”
