POLICE are investigating after shots were fired at a house in St Helens as fears mount that tensions between rival traveller families are set to again erupt into violence.

Officers were called to Derbyshire Hill Road in Parr - the scene of numerous shootings over the past six months - at around 8.30pm last night.

A witness told the St Helens Reporter gangs of local travellers flooded the area in the wake of the shooting searching for the culprit.

“There were lots of people driving around in convoys looking for whoever did this,” said the woman, who did not wish to be named.

“This kind of thing, with shootings, has been going on for a while. It is scary.”

No-one was injured but a force spokesman said a house had been damaged by gun shots.

“The scene has been sealed for forensic examination, house-to-house enquiries are underway and patrols have been stepped up in the area,” the spokesman added.

Witnesses should call officers in the Matrix team on 0151 777 5699 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
