Brave woman punched in robbery

A WOMAN was punched in the face as she bravely fought off a vicious robber who targeted a St Helens bakery.

The man had burst into Pimletts store on Rivington Avenue Saturday December 1 as staff were shutting up shop for the day at 4.45pm.

Initially the thug posed as a customer, asking if he could buy one of the cakes on display.

But when staff opened the register he leapt over the counter and attempted to grab the till's contents.

But his efforts were thwarted when staff attempted to push him away from the cash register and out of the shop. In the ensuing struggle the raider punched one of the female members of staff in the face.

He then escaped empty-handed in a green vehicle, which is believed to have included FFL on its registration plate.

Detective Sergeant Tommy Wright of St Helens CID said: "This women quite bravely tried to fight this man off. She was not seriously injured but it could have been a lot worse."

The man is described as white, aged between 30 and 35-years-old, of medium build and between 5ft 9in and 5ft 11in tall. Witnesses also described the raider as having sharp, pointed features.

Anyone with any information should contact DC Uxley at St Helens CID on 0151 777 6070.

Detectives are hunting a pedal-powered thief who robbed a 64-year-old woman as she rode down a Newton street.

The cyclist was travelling along Wargrave Road on Tuesday November 20 when the attacker struck.

She saw a man approaching her on a push bike and as he rode past her he grabbed at her handbag.

Although his first attack failed the man turned round and rode back towards his victim, snatching her black hand bag and escaping down Victoria Street.

The man is described as aged 25 to 30-years-old, white, around 5ft 8in tall with black hair and wearing chequered-type cap and a dark bomber jacket.
