Bookies targeted by robber

Detectives are hunting an armed robber who targeted a bookies in Thatto Heath.

The Bedfred bookmakers on Nutgrove Road was raided just as a staff were preparing to close for the day.

Two staff members were threatened with a black handgun during the robbery, which happened last Thursday at around 8.30pm.

The terrified workers were ordered to open the shop’s safe but when they told the raider they didn’t have access he instead made off with the contents of the till.

Detective say he also spoke with a St Helens accent.

Police say the crook, who is described as white, aged in his late 30s, around 5ft 9ins tall with a black hood and black neck-warmer covering his head and face, fled on towards Scholes Lane.

It is the third armed robbery in the area in recent weeks, with banks in Thatto Heath and Prescot both targeted. A 67-year-old has been arrested and bailed in connection with both raids.
