Blockbuster following HMV into administration
St Helens' Blockbuster store in Bridge Street is set to close
BLOCKBUSTER stores in St Helens and Newton-le-Willows are both among the 129 earmarked for closure after the movie rental firm slipped into administration.
The joint administrators to Blockbuster confirmed that stores on Bridge Street and Wargrave Road were among the planned phased closure, in addition to 31 UK stores which have already been put on notice of closure.
However the store on Church Street, Prescot, has not been listed for closure.
Administrators also confirmed that there would be a number of closing down promotions across the stores as they continue to review the profitability of the chain.
Although around 10 staff across the St Helens and Newton stores will be facing redundancy, the store closures are not planned with immediate effect.
In the meantime, the stores will remain open for business and customers will be notified of any closure in advance so they can return their outstanding rental items in time.
Amazingly, Blockbuster is the third high street casualty of 2013 - after photography firm Jessops and HMV both slipped into administration too.
Joint administrator Lee Manning, of accountancy firm Deloitte, said: “The store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold. We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time. We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support.”
