Beating World Cup violence

Police are expecting a rise in the number of domestic violence incidents in St Helens ... because of the World Cup.

With passions rising and alcohol being in free flow, police officers anticipate increased reports of football-related and alcohol-fuelled violence during the games.

To try to combat this police have set up a campaign in collaboration with St Helens Council to offer victims a lifeline. The campaign will run throughout June and July and aims to reduce repeat victimization, increase the number of arrests for domestic assault and bring to justice more of the people responsible for committing such crimes.

Publicity on buses, vans, posters and phone kiosks throughout the borough will also promote the campaign.

Victims are being encouraged not to suffer in silence and call the St Helens Domestic Violence Unit on 0151 777 1590 for advice.

Detective chief inspector Richie Davies said: "Our records show alcohol is often a factor linked to violent behaviour and, over the coming weeks, there'll no doubt be lots of parties at people's homes and drinking sessions in the pub.

"We must be prepared to deal with all aspects of violent behaviour and that includes domestic abuse.

"Officers in the Domestic Violence Unit here in St Helens are specially trained to deal with these types of investigations and throughout the World Cup they'll be working alongside officers to deal with reports of domestic-related incidents.

"My message to people who may consider themselves a victim of domestic violence is that help is available and we can make a difference - please contact us or any of the support agencies.

"Equally help is also available for perpetrators who wish to change their behaviour but rest assured, if they continue their violent conduct, they will be sought and brought to justice."
