Axe-wielding fiend robs shop

AN axe-wielding robber targeted a convenience store in St Helens.

Police say the armed robber approached the counter at the Co-Operative store in Warrington Road, Rainhill, at about 8.30pm on Wednesday, April 11.

He then produced an axe and demanded money from the cashier.

The robber then escaped on foot in the direction of Weaver Avenue.

Although uninjured, the cashier was left very shaken by the incident.

He was wearing a black North Face Hy-Vent-type coat with a black smock covering the lower half of his face, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

DC Roy Waller said: “We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously and we are appealing to anyone who may have information about it or about the person responsible to call us so that we can take action against them.”

An investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is on-going and CCTV is now being examined.

n Witnesses should call St Helens CID on 0151 777 6038.
