POLICE were called to a St Helens primary school after receiving reports that a motorist had attempted to lure a little girl into his car.

Officers turned out to investigate reports of an attempted abduction near Birchley St Mary’s Primary School in Billinge last Tuesday afternoon (February 26).

It led to text message alerts being issued to several local schools.

However, police have revealed that the incident was subsequently classed as a false alarm.

A force spokeswoman confirmed that the motorist concerned, an elderly man, had simply been asking for directions because he was lost. She said: “We received a report that someone had asked this little girl to get in his car while she was walking home from school.

“She was frightened by what happened and her family called us because they feared the worst.

“But we had a good description of the car and used CCTV footage in the area to trace the driver.

“It turns out the man wasn’t from the area and had merely stopped to ask directions because he was lost.

“We’re satisfied that no offence was committed. It was a simple misunderstanding.”
