Aeroplane part crashes into house

A PENSIONER is convinced that a giant metal nut which clattered into his house must have fallen from an aeroplane flying overhead.
Ron Travis told how he was reading the paper in peace when he heard an almighty crash at the back of his house.
When he went outside to investigate he found that part of his guttering had been split in two by a giant unified locking nut which was lying on the ground.
He said: “I was just picking a couple of horses from the racing page when I heard this almighty bang. I didn’t have a clue what it was - I just heard something clatter into the guttering at a rate of knots and all the pigeons scarpered.
“When I got outside I found this giant nut resting near a drainage grid on the flagging at the back.
“There was a big hole in my gutter - it had been cracked in half - and the muck from inside the gutter had splattered all over the windows.
“By the time I got out there and realised what had happened there was no sign of a plane in the sky - but I’m convinced that’s where it must have come from. We’re under a flight path.”
Mr Travis, 67, of Charles Street at the back of St Helens Town Hall, has since taken the nut, which has scribbling on two sides and telltale signs of wear and tear, to Liverpool John Lennon Airport to see what they made of it.
Airport staff took a photo of the object but later found that none of their aircraft had been flying over St Helens at the time - just before 1pm on Saturday, January 12.
A spokesman for Manchester Airport told the Reporter none of their planes were flying over St Helkens on the date of Mr Travis’ close encounter.
