DEMOLITION work has started on one of the most instantly recognisable landmarks on the St Helens skyline.

Contractors have finally moved in to painstakingly deconstruct the redundant 85-metre high Jackson Street gas tower, after a planned demolition last summer was scuppered by resident Peregrine Falcons.

Despite netting being put up to encourage the birds of prey to move on, they were found to still be nesting at the site until a new RSPB-approved nesting platform was created for them less than a mile away.

The steel structure of the gas holder will now be carefully cut down to size over a five-month period - with work expected to be completed by the end of May.

National Grid bosses say the tower, which has sustained fire damage in recent years, must be pulled down for safety reasons.

A special lift has already been created on the side of the tower to safely winch workmen to the top.

Keith Johnston, National Grid’s commercial property manager, said: “The age and condition of the Jackson Street gas holder, alongside the fact that it is no longer required to store gas, means that the most appropriate course of action is to bring it down.
