A MEMBER of the first St Helens schoolboys football team ever to go on tour is hoping to organise a reunion - nearly 50 years on.

Dave Parr, 60, wants to bring together the town’s schoolboy team which enjoyed a memorable Easter tour of Hereford, Weston-Super-Mare and Bristol back in 1965.

Dave told the Reporter: “One of the highlights of the tour was the first game against Hereford schoolboys, which we played at Hereford United’s ground. The match was officiated by Jim Finney - a top referee who hailed from Peasley Cross and went on to take charge of an FA Cup final.

“We also beat Bristol schoolboys 2-1, which was quite a feat because they went on to win the English Schools Trophy later that year.”

A photograph of the squad, all 14-years-old at the time, was taken in front of the Town Hall just before they set off, with captain John Armson, who went on to have trials with Manchester Utd, snapped shaking hands with Mayor of St Helens Harold Rimmer.

Amazingly, Dave Parr can still remember every single name on the snapshot too!

On the front row, kneeling down, is Kevin Grice, John Houghton, John Campbell, Cliff Pendlebury, Alan Cross, Colin Tinsley and Graham Stirrup.

And at the back, from left to right, is teacher Dave Roberts, Gerry Anderson, Alan Eagling, Mark Holtby, John Garvey, Kevin Simms, Jim Molyneux, Graham Stott and inspirational teacher Sid Green - who was on the English Schools football committee for at least 15 years.

Dave Parr described Mr Green as “a hell of a servant to St Helens schoolboy football”.

Next in line is Alan Cowley, followed by George Andrews, John Armson (c), Jim Fraser, Mayor Harold Rimmer, coach driver George Ashton, Dave Parr, teacher Mr Gibbon, John Rigby, Barry Leavesly, Brian Eaves, teacher Jim Forshaw, Alan Dean and teacher Kenny Lowe.
