Former Saints star John Stankevitch’s mum has been killed after she was hit by a van while out walking her dog.

Cath Stankevitch suffered severe head injuries following the incident yesterday (Sunday) at around 3pm.

The 54-year-old was rushed to Aintree University by air ambulance but succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

Police are now investigating the incident, which happened on Houghton Green Road, Widnes.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Police were called following reports of a collision involving a van and two pedestrians.

“A 54-year-old pedestrian was taken to Aintree Hospital but sadly died.

“The driver was taken to Whiston Hospital and is in a stable condition.”

John Stankevitch, 35, later took to social media to pay tribute to his mother.

He said: “For those that knew my mum, she was hit by a car today while walking the dog.

“She passed away this afternoon. Absolutely devastated.

“Thank you to everybody that has posted about my incredible mum. We are all in bits as you imagine. 54 is no age to leave anybody behind.”

His former club Saints also sent condolences, tweeting: “All the club are thinking of you at this time John.”
