Hunt for man who attacked afternoon drinker

Detectives are hunting a man who launched a savage attack on a drinker in a St Helens pub.

Officers have released CCTV stills of a man they want to speak to in connection with the March 9 attack.

The victim was attacked as he stood by the bar at the Nelson pub on Bridge Street, St Helens town centre.

A man approached him and police say an altercation between the two men ensued.

The dispute then moved to the entrance of the pub, where the victim was punched several times in the head.

He suffered significant head injuries.

The attack happened at around 5.25pm.

Insp Andy Johnston said: “This was a particularly nasty and unprovoked assault.

“At the time of the incident, there would have been a number of people inside the pub and in the area who may have seen what happened or saw the man leaving the area.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything which in hindsight seems suspicious.

“We would also ask the man in the CCTV stills or anyone who knows of their identity to get in touch.”

Anyone who has any information is asked to call Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
