IT’S been a long time coming but the Jackson Street gas tower that has dominated the St Helens town centre skyline is finally coming down.
The slow pace of progress has baffled by residents, who have speculated that the ‘demolition’ job will take at least 12 months to complete at the current rate of progress.
Contractors decided to take the tower apart piece by piece rather than in one spectacular explosion because of its proximity to homes and business.
It was due to be completed by the start of the summer.
Progress is finally starting to take shape as the tower is this week around half its original size.
