DOZENS of police officers and force helicopter were deployed to break up a confrontation between two rival traveller gangs.

A number of men were held following the bust-up on land close to the St Helens Linkway.

Superintendent Dave Fox said: “The Force received information from the community that there was potential for disorder between two local crime groups in the St Helens area.

“Police resources were sent to the area to ensure that this did not happen and a policing operation remains in place.”
