A man died after his car ploughed into a railway bridge in St Helens during high winds in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Peasley Cross Lane - close to Saints’ Langtree Park stadium - at around 4.30am.

The driver of the Ford Fiesta was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

It is unclear whether the bad weather which was battering the North West region at the time of the incident played any part in the crash.

A police spokesman said the driver’s next of kin had been notified.

The road has been closed between Sherdley Road and the A58 to allow police to fully investigate the incident.
