TWO St Helens families are in mourning today after loved ones died in separate tragedies.
Twenty-two-year-olds Heather Dyer and James Smart both passed away in the last seven days.
Heather Dyer was stabbed to death in Chapel Street in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 23) less than 72 hours after RAF serviceman James Smart plunged to his death while on operational duty in Italy.
Describing her daughter as “a vibrant and happy young lady”, Miss Dyer’s heartbroken mother said that her daughter’s death had “left a massive hole in our lives which will never be filled”.
Senior aircraftman (SAC) James Smart was killed instantly when the truck he was driving through southern Italy plunged 300ft from a motorway viaduct.
His devastated family, who are set collect a medal in his honour next week, told how SAC Smart was just starting to fulfil his lifelong ambitions when he was “cut down in his prime”.
SAC Smart’s body is set to be repatriated to RAF Lyneham tomorrow (Thursday, July 28) prior to a full military procession through Wootton Bassett.
