A man who died after he was hit by a train at Thatto Heath station took his own life, a coroner has ruled.

David Wilson, of nearby Crossley Road, leapt in front of a train travelling between St Helens Central and Liverpool Lime Street on Tuesday, November 10.

An inquest held at St Helens Town Hall was told 53-year-old Mr Wilson had struggled with drug and alcohol dependency since his relationship broke down several years earlier.

Coroner’s officer Kevin Farrell said several commuters had witnessed Mr Wilson’s death.

A British Transport Police investigation ruled out foul play.

A later search of Mr Wilson’s home found he had used his laptop to search for train timetables.

Coroner Graham Jackson concluded Mr Wilson committed suicide.
