Motorists faced long delays during the Thursday night rush hour after a crash involving two vehicles on the M6.
The collision, between a van and a car towing a boat, happened at around 3.30pm.
The van had gone down an embankment near to junction 27 and the car and trailer were in lane three.
Motorist passing St Helens were held up in the delays.
A stretch of the motorway was closed earlier in the afternoon and one lane remains closed for recovery work to be carried out.
The driver of the van was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.
The incident has caused lengthy tailbacks.
