Residents are being reminded to request ID from canassers working on behalf of the council before handing over personal information.

The call comes amid concerns fraudsters may attempt to use the run-up to the local elections as a ruse to pinch personal data.

A number of canvassers are currently out visiting properties around the borough to encourage people who are eligible to vote, but have not yet registered, to complete their registration forms.

The council has already received one report of a resident who completed her form with the help of a canvasser but since received visits from someone else asking for personal details.

Coun Anthony Johnson, cabinet member for Corporate Services, said: “If a canvasser calls at your property, ensure that you check their ID badge, which will include their full name and the council logo, before you discuss your details or give out any information.

“If you have any concerns, please call Electoral Services on 01744 676464 or email elections@sthelens.gov.uk.”
