A St Helens man caught with a vast collection of disgusting child porn images has narrowly avoided a prison sentence.

Paul Unsworth, of Oakfield Close, Thatto Heath, was charged with six offences relating to the possession and distribution of indecent images of youngsters.

Magistrates said because of the nature and amount of images involved a custodial sentence was appropriate.

However, they eventually handed the 44-year-old a 26 week jail term, suspended for two years.

It means if he re-offends during that time he can be sent to prison.

Unsworth was arrested after a cache of vile images were found on his computer in July 2012.

He pleaded guilty to all the offences.

Unsworth must also serve a two year supervision order and pay court costs.

He must also forfeit his lap top computer and two hard drives, as well as registering at St Helens police station every week for the next seven years.
