Campaign to make St Helens smiles better

National Smile Month is coming to St Helens and Healthy Living’s Oral Health team will be holding special events to back the UK’s biggest oral health campaign.

National Smile Month aims to promote and raise awareness of good oral health by using the British Dental Health Foundation’s three key messages: brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks and visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

To show support for the campaign, the Healthy Living Oral Health team will be supporting the St Helens Library Service’s Bath Book Bed events being held across St Helens Libraries.

This aims to put the smile into National Smile Month and each child who registers and attends the library events will receive their very own dental goody bag and an opportunity to get their picture taken with a ‘Smiley’ – the campaign icon.

Susan Forster, Interim Director of Public Health said: “National Smile Month is a great initiative to raise awareness of how important and yet how simple it is to keep good oral health. The Oral Health team will be supporting events across St Helens and supporting clinics, dental practices, nurseries schools and the hospital. We hope everyone in St Helens can get involved and make it a month to smile.”

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE said: “I’m delighted that St Helens has joined the thousands of organisations in engaging with National Smile Month.

“It is a great reflection of local community spirit and an excellent way to promote good oral health.

“By making an event as fun and imaginative as possible, we hope it will inspire more people to join in the fun than ever before while delivering the three key messages for good oral health.”

The Oral Health team will also be supporting Health Visiting and Breastfeeding teams to provide the St Helens Baby Bottle to Cup Campaign.

Staff will be exchanging baby bottles for feeder cups at baby assessment/weaning clinics (limited stock).
