St Helens Town 1
THE focus turned to League Cup action as Town visited Silsden on Saturday.
Town started the contest well as Addison thundered an effort off the crossbar, before Ledger had an effort turned around the post by the home keeper.
From the resulting corner, Addision delivered and Dyson’s effort was cleared off the line before, Butorins turned the loose ball home to open his Town account.
Dyson was in the action again when his effort went just over the bar, before a looping header from a free-kick beat the keeper, but again Town were foiled by the bar.
Just after the half-hour mark, a Town move involving Quirk, Ledger and Butorins culminated in Addison firing wide, before Newbrook tipped an effort from Silsden’s Hargreaves around the post. From the corner, McNulty somehow failed to hit the target with a free header.
Silsden came into it more after the interval but failed to make much of an impression in the final third.
Hargreaves found Bryan with a diagonal ball, but the latter fired wide of the left-hand post.
The home keeper pulled off a fine save from Ledger to keep the hosts in the contest, before Newbrook kept out a free-kick from Moses.
Olsen almost rounded the win off taking advantage of a mistake to get through on goal, but the keeper saved well at his feet.
But Town had done enough to secure passage into the next round where they will face a visit to Bootle.
Town return to league action with three away matches, the first at AFC Liverpool tonight, Wednesday (kick-off 7.45pm). They then visit Alsager Town on Saturday, November 5 (kick-off 3pm), before taking a trip to Bootle the following Tuesday, November 8 (kick-off 7.45pm).
