INNOVATIVE doctors at Whiston Hospital have developed a mobile phone app to help staff assess burns injuries.

The Mersey Burns Tool app that can be used on an iPad or iPhone and will enable clinical staff to quickly and accurately assess burn injuries.

The app recently won the Excellence in Innovation award from the Merseyside and Cheshire Health Innovation and Education Clusters.

The app was developed by Professor Paul McArthur and surgeon Rowan Pritchard-Jones.

It combines standard methods for calculating the total body surface area burned, and the amount of fluids the patient requires, incorporating other significant factors such as the patient’s age and weight.

Mr Pritchard-Jones says: “The idea came from our own experiences as on-call burn surgeons at Whiston Hospital, guiding colleagues in other hospitals to accurately assess and resuscitate a burn injured patient.”
