THE lights are back on at Broadway - St Helens Council’s newly revamped state-of-the-art sports centre.
The centre - on the site of the old Broadway High School in Grange Park - has had a £291,000 refit, thanks largely to £250,000 worth of funding from Badminton England.
The reopened sports centre is now a regional badminton centre and the £41,000 extra funding stumped up by St Helens Council has also developed Broadway into a “centre of excellence” for youth activities.
St Helens Badminton Limited now operate the centre from Monday to Friday with activities including club and junior league badminton, women only, fifty plus, disability sessions, dance and Taekwando.
A wider range of free sporting activities are also now on offer for 10 to 19-year-olds every Friday afternoon and weekend - including cheerleading, trampolining, break-dancing and boxing.
Council leader Marie Rimmer said: “We were keen not to lose this facility. And Badminton England were looking for such a facility for its sub regional programme so the timing was perfect.
“When I last visited the site almost 12 months ago it was cold and unwelcoming. The building had been locked up since the high school closed, the hall was poorly lit and, in places, the floor had worn through to the foundations below.
“But it has now been brought back to life.”
