TWO lanes of the M6 in Haydock have been closed after a lorry crashed and shed its load of baked beans.
The HGV hit the central reservation at around 11am today (Wednesday), stopping on the southbound carriageway near to the junction 23 sliproad.
Traffic officers are urging drivers to avoid the area.
It is believed the lanes will remain closed until 3pm today.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “A lorry travelling along the motorway struck the central reservation barrier just before 11am today and has come to rest in the southbound carriageway just south of the southbound entry slip at junction 23 - blocking two lanes in both directions.
“The incident is likely to cause delays in both directions of the M6 and drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible and seek alternative routes.
“All traffic stuck behind the incident has been able to escape the scene using lane one of the motorway in each direction.
“One lane in each direction of the motorway remains open at this time but recovery work and repairs to the central reservation barrier may require the full closure of the northbound or southbound carriageway - or both carriageways - at some stage.”
