TICKETS to a huge amateur boxing bash in St Helens are selling fast, organisers say.

The event has been organised to raise money for two of the town’s best-known sports clubs and will feature one of Britain’s best known boxers, Richie Woodhall, as a guest speaker.

Sutton Boxing Academy (SBA) and Thatto Heath Crusaders will benefit from the fund-raiser at St Helens Town Hall on June 9.

A host of top amateur fighters will lace up for the evening while former super-middleweight World Champion Woodhall will regale fight fans with tales from his glittering career.

The bash has been organised by SBA boss Joe Paladino, whose 15-year-old son Giuseppi is on the bill.

Joe, who recently revealed he is battled thyroid cancer, said: “This is going to be one of the biggest evenings of boxing ever in the town. How many times does a fighter of Richie Woodhall’s calibre come to St Helens?”

Proceeds from the evening will be split between the boxing club and Thatto Heath Crusaders, both clubs close to Paladino’s heart.

He added: “It’s going to be a great night.

“Sutton Boxing Academy is growing all the time, we’re really giving local youngsters a chance to get off the streets and channel their energy.”

Woodhall, a bronze medalist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and gold at the 1990 Commonwealth game, won the world super-middle weight championship during the 1990s before retiring in 2002.

He is now a successful TV and radio commentator and appeared as Brad Pitt’s body double in the film Snatch.

Tickets close from £15 to £35 for individuals. Tables for 10 can be purchased for £350.

The evening will include a champagne reception, three-course meal, guest speaker Richie Woodhall, plus the main event, an evening of top class fight action.
