POLICE were called to a town centre bank after staff discovered a “suspect package”.

Officers attended the Lloyds TSB branch in Hardshaw Street at about 1.30pm today (Wednesday, June 19).

A force spokesman said that officers then examined the package, but found that it was simply a parcel that had innocently been left at the bank.

It is the second bomb scare in St Helens this week.

On Monday a primary school in Rainhill had to be evacuated after staff were sent a threatening email telling them an explosive device had been planted in the school.

Pupils at St Bartholomew’s RC Primary on School Lane were ushered on to the school field while specialist police bomb disposal teams searched the building.

After an extensive search of the buildings, officers found the threat was a hoax.

A force spokesman said: “A search of the school has been completed by officers and an investigation is underway to find those responsible for the hoax. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
