A 56-year-old was attacked by three men leaving the victim suffering from a broken finger and cuts to his face.

The savage assault took place on Rainhill Road close to Eccleston Park Golf Club.

Detectives believe the attack was completely unprovoked.

The victim required hospital treatment but has since been discharged.

DC Rob Keir, said: “I would appeal to anyone with information about the incident to call us. In particular we believe a car stopped near to where the assault took place and sounded their car horn, which caused the offenders to make off on foot. I am appealing to the driver of that car to come forward as you could have some really important information.”

Witnesses to the August 31 attack can call St Helens CID on 0151 777 6881.
