ARSONISTS torched a disused nursery.
Fire crews from St Helens, Eccleston and Whiston were all called to the old Daisy Bank Nursery on Glover Street, near Borough Road, after call-handlers received six calls from worried neighbours shortly before 8pm on Monday (April 8).
The single storey building was well alight by the time firefighters arrived, but the flames were extinguished within 25 minutes.
St Helens Fire Station watch manager Gary Spain said: “This was a difficult fire to tackle due to missing floorboards within the building which meant we had to find a safe route to access while tackling the fire.
“Although there was a lot of fire and smoke coming out of some of the windows the fire inside itself was relatively small and involved old books and paper.
“It was a suspected deliberate ignition.”
An area of around 10 square metres of the building was left damaged by heat and smoke. Nobody was injured.
