A COUPLE from St Helens handed over £800 to St Helens Hospital’s Lilac Centre.

Val and David Harris asked guests at their ruby wedding anniversary bash to donate cash to the cancer centre instead of giving them presents.

The donation was inspired by the memory of the couple’s son, Andrew, who died aged 24.

He was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and died in December 2002.

Andrew received treatment at the Lilac Centre during his 13-month battle with the disease, which is a form of skin cancer.

Val said: “We told our family and friends that if they wished to mark the occasion then we would welcome donations in Andrew’s memory, but said that we did not want them to buy us presents.

“We’re extremely grateful for the help our family received from the Lilac Centre and hope this donation can help other families through a difficult time.”

Jeanette Ribton, Lilac Centre Manager, said: “I would like to thank Val and David, their family, and all those who have supported them, for their generous donation.

“Money donated to the centre goes towards ensuring that our patients are cared for in a comfortable environment.”
