FORMER deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott attended the official opening of the new Megamart in St Helens.
The Dentons Green Lane retail centre was opened by the high-profile politician last week, alongside Mayor of St Helens Tom Hargreaves.
Among the businesses that have already opened up on the 40-unit site is the PC Doctor Repair Service, run by entrepreneur Laurence Lai.
Mr Lai is already the managing director of 8-IT, who provide support and troubleshooting services for IT problems.
He said: “Business is tough for everyone at the moment but with our experience and diverse business portfolio we cannot just weather this economic storm but find opportunities to grow and diversify.
“We know other companies are struggling and myself and my team are at the forefront of helping these struggling companies to not just get off the ground but to grow along with us.”
It is not just Mr Lai who is trailblazing entrepreneurship at Megamart either.
Aileen Platt has also opened a business, Destiny Designs, which provides bespoke garments at extremely competitive prices.
She said: “I provide handmade ladies clothing and accessories, many one of a kind, unique items that are not available anywhere else.”
