A ST Helens woman has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Sarah Lyon, who lived in the Elizabeth Court Care Centre in Sutton, was born in Wigan but moved to St Helens in 1927.

She worked as a manager at Stokers in Market Street, Earlestown, before marrying husband John in 1934.

After the war, Mrs Lyon opened a shop in Cross Lane selling sweets and tobacco.

After Mr Lyon passed away in April 1971, she decided to sell the businesss and moved to Mercer Street in Newton. She attended communion at St Peter’s Church regularly.

A lover of animals, Mrs Lyons has always cared for dogs and regularly took from out for walks.

In her retirement years she enjoyed baking, knitting and embroidery.
